  • Charlotte Arts Festival Chooses Shelby Location for Performance - The 2013 Ulysses Festival, Charlotte’s Spring Festival of the Arts, has chosen the Don Gibson Theatre in Shelby for a performance of a commissioned work for the Charlotte Symphony entitled, Mill Village: A Piedmont Rhapsody.  The free event will be held Sunday night, April 7, 7:00PM, at the Don Gibson. The evening will consist of a performance by the Charlotte Symphony chamber orchestra members.  In the piece, Composer David Crowe has reflected a machine-inspired rhythm.  The sounds will coalesce into a musical portrait of the technology and society of the decades around 1900 when textile mills made Piedmont Carolina.  Behind the musicians, film clips and vintage stills will flash on the screen.  A narrator will read “A Dry Time” by poet and Shelby native Ron Rash chronicling the journey from farm to factory and oral history voices will offer first-hand memories of life in the new world of the mill village.  As the piece concludes, performers will slip away one by one, much as the textile economy has slipped away.  The concert is being offered free to the public thanks to support from the Foundation for the Carolinas and First National Bank of Shelby.  Tickets are required and can be obtained by calling the Don Gibson , 704.487.8114 or stopping by the Theatre.
