The Junior Beta Club at Kings Mountain Middle School is sponsoring a project called Shoes 4 Water.
We are asking students and staff to provide shoes that are wearable. There should be no holes, rips, tears, mold or mildew, and any style shoe is needed--from high heels to tennis shoes to flip flops to boots. Men, women, and children shoes are all welcome. If the shoes have laces, just tie the laces together. If the shoes do not have laces, then either place them in a grocery bag loosely tied or you may rubber band or zip tie the shoes tougher. These shoes are then transported to Kenya, Haiti, and South America and distributed among needed villages. Shoes in good conditions are then sold in these countries for pennies on the dollar and then that money is used to provide drilling water wells, drilling equipment, filtration devices, pumps, and other related supplies.
Here are some facts of interest for these countries:
1) Million of Kenyans have inadequate access to water--16 million Kenyans rely on water kiosks, protected wells, rainwater catchment, and open water sources such as flowing streams and shallow open wells to meet their daily water needs.
2) Poor people in urban areas pay much more for water --The poor buy water at a cost many times higher than the price paid by non-poor consumers who have access to piped water.
3) It will take at least 30 years for rural areas to have acceptable water coverage---The government is working to bring water to urban areas first.
4) In urban areas water coverage is declining--The cities have rolling outages in the pipeline systems in to provide each district it's needed water.
5) Women suffer the most especially where there is a lack of water. In such a scenario, a woman will be forced to wake up very early in the morning, walk over long distances to just get water.
6) Children Suffer--some of the children walk the long distances to search for water, forfeiting hours of schoolwork. Not to mention the exposure to water related illness. *** More people die each year from UNSAFE WATER than from Wars*****
Thank you for your support!
